Job Description

Evolve Music seeks a dynamic Chair to deliver strong leadership to the Board of Trustees.  If you love music and believe in its power to transform lives, if you believe that the arts are crucial to promoting social inclusion, health and wellbeing, have relevant experience and the time to commit personally to the organisation, this role could be of interest to you.


Evolve Music believes that everyone should have the opportunity to access music-making. Engaging in creative music-making has the power to inspire people for a lifetime.  We create environments where people can express themselves, have a go and thrive using music.  Through inclusive creative music workshops, we work to ensure communities across the South West have access to high quality opportunities to make music. Key to this is our relationships with other charities, local authorities, funders, music education hubs and community groups.


We are looking for an exceptional individual with the experience, integrity and skills necessary to act as an ambassador for Evolve Music, and to lead the Board in the governance of the organisation. Leadership experience in any sector and an understanding of the role of not-for-profit Boards are essential.

Purpose of the role:

-        To lead and direct the Board and the organisation through to the next stage of its development.

-        To ensure Trustees fulfill their duties and responsibilities

-        To support the Founders (Voluntary Director/Assistant Director) to develop opportunities to recruit part time members of staff.



-        To lead the Board of Evolve Music to develop strategy in line with the organisations vision and mission and to make sure that activities remain true to its values.

-        To plan and lead quarterly meetings and AGM in Radstock, setting tasks and writing agendas according with organisations priorities with the support from other Trustees.

-        To work alongside appointed staff acting as a channel for communication between them and the Board of Trustees.

-        Advocate for Evolve Music with supporters and stakeholders and introduce new contacts where appropriate.

-        Represent the organisation at events and other engagements where required.

Personal Specification:


  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong business background and acumen
  • Excellent financial comprehension,  particularly of the not for profit sector
  • Strong personal networks in relevant sectors 
  • ‍Strong interpersonal skills; ability to  quickly gain Board and staff confidence
  • Understanding of Governance; compliance & control requirements; policy setting    
  • Excellent communication, listening and  presentation skills 
  • ‍Decisive; works well under pressure 
  • ‍Ability and willingness to devote the  necessary time to Evolve Music


  • Previous experience of working for a non-profit  organisation
  • Background in the arts, specifically music
  • Prior Board experience and skilled at  managing meetings 
  • Interest and involvement in the cultural arts sector

Are you a freelance music leader looking for exciting opportunities to work with communities and  young people across Somerset and Wiltshire?

Evolve Music are a community music charity based in Somerset looking for experienced and passionate music leaders to join our pool of freelancers.

The Role

Our creative composition approach allows us to be flexible and offer tailored workshops/projects to Early Years, Young People and Community groups. Using an open access creative method we can engage all ages and abilities in our workshops. Our approach is process focussed, but many of our projects have a natural performance outcome.

Essential Skills:

- high standard musical skills on one or multiple instruments

- improvisation skills

- composition skills

- excellent aural skills

- ability to play from memory

- sound piano and/or guitar skills

- experience of working in relevant areas (ie schools, community groups, Early Years settings etc.)


We are looking for music leaders with specific skills and experience of working with the following:

 -       Early Years delivery (0 – 5 year olds)

-       Young People (Primary and Secondary)

-       Music Technology

-       Special Educational Needs and Disability sector
